Ten things to help AEW’s Women’s Division

As a fan of AEW, one of my biggest gripes with the company has been its delivery of their women’s division. So far it felt lost and confused with little direction and purpose. The division could and should be so much more. They have the talent, the passion and the energy, however, something just hasn’t … Read more

Winners & Losers: SmackDown 11/29/19

This week’s Friday Night SmackDown certainly had its moments for the women’s division. Coming off a Survivor Series loss, SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley and Sasha Banks addressed their fellow colleagues in disgust. The one to answer their tirade was Lacey Evans.

The only match of this week’s show was between Sonya Deville and Nikki Cross. The match itself was short but with Cross pulling off a victory it led to the return of Alexa Bliss.

For the full rundown of the show, you can head over to the live coverage that you can view here.

Here are the Winners & Losers from this week’s SmackDown:

WINNER: Alexa Bliss

Alexa Bliss made her return and although it wasn’t entirely a surprise it puts her as a big win. Bliss is scheduled to be in a Fatal 4-way this weekend at Starrcade on Sunday, so her reemergence was expected. She was last seen almost two months ago at Hell in a Cell and has been nursing a shoulder injury since.

WINNER: Lacey Evans

Lacey Evans received the biggest win of the week. Although it hasn’t been confirmed that she is Bayley’s next challenger for the title it can be assumed. The face turn for her still remains to be seen on how good it will work, but it is a start. She received a decent reaction from the crowd as well.

Although personally, Evans wouldn’t be my first choice for the next opponent for Bayley, at least it isn’t the same Nikki Cross/Alexa Bliss feud that has been done way too much. More than likely it is only going to be a temporary feud as I don’t see Bayley losing the title until at least WrestleMania.

LOSER: Bayley

Bayley’s heel persona fell big this week. Generally, I feel like her heel turn has been working even if it is a little lackluster. This week however was not a good way to build the champion up especially after a loss at Survivor Series.

After Lacey took down Sasha Banks her bestie simply stood there. It is not a good look for the SmackDown women’s division to have a champion who doesn’t have that fire. She should have won at Survivor Series in order to further her character development.

Final Thoughts:

Sasha Banks could use her own feud and break away some from Bayley. It looks like this could be Carmella. And if nothing comes from this, it should.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1200596925210214400?s=20

I am not opposed to Lacey being Bayley’s next opponent, especially as it may just be a one-off to get to the Royal Rumble. However, this was the perfect time to give Dana Brooke her moment. With her Twitter romance with Batista, Brooke is the talk of wrestling social media right now.

They could have built off of this and had Brooke as the one to come out to confront Bayley and Sasha instead of Lacey. Instead, she was just provided with a backstage segment with Drake Maverick trying to give her a little smoochy smooch. Missed opportunity and we all know Dana loves her opportunities.

Welcome to this week’s Free Match Friday. This week we will take a trip back a decade to revisit what WWE loves to do the most and that is a gimmick match. In this one, we see the “Pilgrims” vs. the “Indians” in a six-woman tag team match. The match consisted of the “Pilgrims” as … Read more

The matches that made “The Man” Becky Lynch

This week Becky Lynch celebrated becoming the longest-reigning WWE Raw Women’s Champion, so to commemorate I have devised a list of her top matches from early career to main-eventer. The matches span through her time at NXT where she established herself as the “Irish Lass-Kicker” with her gutsy break-through performances. To the matches en route … Read more

Winners & Losers: AEW Dark 11/26/19 & Dynamite 11/27/19

We’re back for another look at the Winners and Losers from the week’s AEW shows. The two shows were again a step in the right direction as we saw more improvements to the focus of the division. Winners & Losers: NXT 11/27/19

After a huge WarGames/Survivor Series weekend, there was a lot to unpack on NXT this week. Although we didn’t get an answer from Dakota Kai on why she turned on her best friend – Tegan Nox – she was in action against Candice LeRae. LeRae was part of Team Ripley who was left high and dry when Kai decided to take out Nox.

All three women have been really close friends which has caused LeRae to take the attack on Nox rather personal. Kai entered her match tonight with new music and a new theme marking her heel turn. The match between Kai and LeRae was a really good battle. The match ended in a DQ however when Kai hit LeRae over the head with Nox’s knee brace.

Kai stayed on LeRae after the bell rang and her intention was to clearly take her out of commission much as she did to Nox at WarGames. Rhea Ripley would rush down to the ring to stop the attack and cause Kai to retreat.

The second match of the night was Vanessa Borne taking on Xia Li to seek some retribution on what happened to her tag team partner Aliyah.

The match would be rather short as NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler along with Marina Shafir & Jessamyn Duke would make their way down to ringside. Li would be distracted for just a moment, but she would still secure a fast victory over Borne.

After Li put away Borne, Baszler and the other two would attack. Shafir and Duke would attack first as Li took them out pretty quickly. She would fight off Baszler at first but the numbers game was simply too much as they were able to take out Li.

Baszler would then boast about how she was the big star over this past weekend. She gloated that she took out both Bayley and Becky Lynch and did it at the same time. Enter Rhea Ripley. Ripley would make her way to the ring but by the time she entered the ring Baszler and the other two would be retreating up the ramp. Ripley took to the mic and asked for Baszler to return because she wanted to talk to her face to face.

Baszler would make her way back and stand on the ring apron. Ripley would congratulate her. She did defeat Bayley. She did defeat Becky Lynch. There was one woman she didn’t beat and that was Ripley. Ripley said the next time she battles Baszler it is going to be for the title and she suggested they do it right then and there. Baszler wasn’t having it as she made her way back up the ramp.

Here are your Winners & Losers of the week:

WINNER: Dakota Kai

https://twitter.com/TeganNoxWWE_/status/1199893219884044289?s=20

Overall Kai was a winner this week. Her heel turn is going to take some convincing to people as she is a natural babyface. For me personally, I think she is doing a great job to start. She may not have picked up the win in her match but she did cause the DQ. She stayed on LeRae as well after the match. My only complaint would be that she didn’t cut any type of promo, but hopefully, that will take place in the weeks to come.

WINNER: Rhea Ripley

Ripley pretty much confirmed that she is the number one contender for Baszler’s title which makes her a big winner. After the week she has had as well she not only deserves to get the title shot but she will most likely win. Something tells me it isn’t going to be right away though. Her promo with Baszler was really good also. I feel like they bring the best out of each other.

LOSER: Xia Li

Li may have won her match in a quick fashion much as she did against Aliyah but her being taken out afterward did her no good. It actually didn’t make much sense either besides for Baszler just to take someone out in order to cut her promo.

Final Thoughts:

Overall they touched on the fallout from WarGames and Survivor Series, but I feel like they could have done even more with the women this week. To be honest, I was worried for a moment we weren’t even going to get two women’s matches. The Kai and LeRae match was great and although I understand and accept why the match ended in a DQ I personally don’t like it when good matches end in that fashion.

I really enjoy Vanessa Borne and wish she was being used more than just a jobber. Her theme is great and so is her look. It was great to see her in a match tonight, but that alone wasn’t enough to make her a winner.

Winners & Losers: NXT 11/13/19

The road to WarGames and Survivor Series is getting shorter and shorter as we are less than two weeks away from both. NXT this week was full of the women’s roster which is something that RAW and SmackDown seem to have troubles in doing.

Throughout the night, members of Team Ripley for WarGames was attacked. First, we saw team captain Rhea Ripley and Tegan Nox who were laid out by an unknown attacker. Later on, in the night their fellow team member Candice LeRae suffers the same attack. *Cue Scarlett Bordeaux who made an appearance by helping LeRae after the attack*

https://twitter.com/TeganNoxWWE_/status/1194831533540085766?s=20

What was interesting though is Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke was also attacked at the same time LeRae was. These two ladies are not part of the WarGames match but this could mean they will be on the NXT women’s team for the traditional Survivor Series match. There have been no names announced for the Survivor Series match just yet.

There were two matches this week. The first was Xia Li who took on Aliyah in a short match. The second was the highly advertised Women’s Ladder Match which had Io Shirai vs. Mia Yim in the main event. This match being the main event was the exact right choice. The match definitely was slow to start, but by the end it had me invested. As a result of Io Shirai winning this slugfest of a match, we now know that Kay Lee Ray is the fourth and final member of Team Baszler for WarGames.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1194832271955701760?s=20

Let’s get right into the Winners & Losers of this week’s NXT:

WINNERS: Mia Yim & Io Shirai

Say what you want of Mia Yim but she delivered and beyond by the end of this main event. Between the hit to the face with the ladder and the ending of going through the ladder on the outside shows that she isn’t afraid to take bumps and get hurt. She may not have won the match, but she certainly made an impact.

Shirai did a great job throughout this main event ladder match at selling especially with her hand after it was targeted by Yim with the ladder. She won the advantage for her team for WarGames which is a huge positive heading into this type of match.

WINNER: Kay Lee Ray

An obvious winner of the night is NXT UK Champion Kay Lee Ray. With having WWE just recently in Manchester it was odd that she wasn’t involved in any sort of way. Now it makes more sense as to why she wasn’t used like her male UK roster counterparts were.

This is a good way to get exposure to not only the NXT UK brand but for Ray herself. This definitely isn’t a brand everyone watches, but seeing her in a high profile match such as the first-ever women’s WarGames match is a big win for her.

WINNER: Bayley

Bayley continues to be present during this feud and build up for Survivor Series for her match against Becky Lynch and Shayna Baszler. Many people wrote Bayley off from day one for many reasons, but they are still giving her moments to show she is a force. Her taking out Shayna and possibly being the one that took out Team Baszler along with Shafir and Duke was good to see and what was needed.

LOSER: Aliyah

Sigh. Unfortunately, Aliyah has wound up on the loser end this week. Not only was the match super short, but she was the victim of a busted nose.

Aliyah deserves better, but unfortunately due to the nature of what went down on this week’s show, there isn’t much hope of her to be pushed in any sort of fashion. In fact, if they allowed her and Vanessa to actually be the tag team they are then maybe it would paint Aliyah in a different light.

LOSERS: Rhea Ripley’s Team for WarGames

Ripley and her team were taken out this week besides Mia Yim. Not only was she taken out, but so was Tegan Nox and Candice LeRae. By the end of the show, it was not 100% clear of who took them out, but according to a tweet by Bayley, it is assumed to be her. If it was just Bayley she took out five women plus Shayna and well there ya go.

Winners & Losers: RAW 11/04/19

With Crown Jewel rightfully in our rear window (bye-bye), we can finally start building towards Survivor Series. We saw a glimpse of it on Friday Night SmackDown last week when NXT invaded the blue brand but nothing was set for the upcoming pay-per-view as of yet. It has now been officially announced that Becky Lynch vs. Shayna Baszler vs. Bayley will take place.

There were two matches tonight on RAW that involved the women. The first was The Kabuki Warriors losing to Charlotte Flair & Natalya. The other match was a mixed tag team that involved Zelina Vega & Andrade to face Carolina & Sin Cara. Vega picked up the win for her team. To view the full coverage that was completed for RAW you can click here.

Let’s get right into the Winners & Losers of the week:

WINNER: Zelina Vega

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1191543168795316224?s=20

Zelina showed out tonight during her mixed tag match. Of course, she was the veteran in the ring for the ladies, but regardless she showed why she should be inside that ring. She should do more than just mixed tag matches and by more I mean she should be in the title picture scene.

She would be a breath of fresh air if she were to be given that push and would be a perfect heel for Becky Lynch to cut promos with. It is wishful thinking as we know that is not going to happen.

WINNERS: Shayna Baszler & Becky Lynch

Speaking of great promos, both Shayna and Becky did just that. Shayna proved why she should have moved on from NXT about six to nine months ago. Although NXT is seen more as a lateral move now, her moving to RAW or SmackDown is way overdue. Her as champion in NXT is stifling not just the division but it is also stifling her from becoming more.

As far as Becky she continues to kill it in her promos no matter who she is up against. This is exactly what Becky vs. Ronda was meant to be but never could because of Ronda. Hopefully, Bayley won’t be just that extra person in the match. There is more time to build up this match and hopefully, she can retaliate.

LOSER: Lana

Okay, so I was on the fence last week. I have given this storyline the benefit of the doubt for long enough. It just doesn’t make any sense anymore if it ever did. Can we please do something else with her? If it made sense then it wouldn’t be so bad, but it doesn’t.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1191545978345730048?s=20

LOSER: Carolina

Unfortunately, I wasn’t as impressed with her as I had hoped. Since she lost in her debut match it will be interesting to see if she will continue to be used on RAW or not. She has the talent and maybe after a little while I could see her winding up on the winner side of things.

For some reason, I just felt like she was behind on some of the spots, maybe it was just me? But it was her debut match on RAW skipping right on past NXT so I am sure she was quite nervous.

Final Thoughts:

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1191528126997774336?s=20

Of course, I could put The Kabuki Warriors on the loser list just for the simple fact that they lost. Not only did they lose, but it is clear they are keeping Charlotte Flair and Nattie together to go against them for the titles. The only reason why I am not putting them on the loser list just yet is that one loss doesn’t automatically make their strong push go away. Hopefully, I am wrong and they can continue to be champions even after Charlotte and Nattie face them for the titles. I am probably wrong though.
