Feature: Should TNA Create a Knockouts TV Series?

With a growing Knockouts division, two sets of titles and multiple storylines at the same time, a two-hour time slot shared with the men is beginning to become a little bit cramped. Thinking back to the early days of the Knockouts division in 2007, there is a reason why the feud between Awesome Kong and Gail Kim is so highly regarded — it had time to grow by receiving ample amounts of attention and spanned two pay per views. The feud and matches between the two helped put the Knockouts division on the map and showed the mass audience what women’s wrestling could be. Fast forward to present day and it seems to me that the feuds in the division are often half-baked and nothing more than a series of matches or run-ins or backstage attacks. Where’s the scripting and storyline gone? Should TNA just be given a pass because they have good matches?

With more Knockouts utilised than ever before, it’s a competition for screen time and usually the slots given to the women on Impact are fought over. Thus, a lot of the times you’ll see feuds rotate from week to week but this doesn’t seem to be working. Going back to that earlier example, Kim vs Kong, at the time it was the sole storyline for the Knockouts and was able to have consistent time and effort put into it. Perhaps today, the TNA writers are trying to do too much despite having too little time. Many times, feuds have just come out of no where and ended abruptly — Alissa Flash vs Hamada is one example. But even then, the bigger feuds such as Kong vs Tara if you think back, was nothing more than a series of run-ins and attacks with little explanation for the animosity between them, and no real dialogue or emotions being told in storyline.

The launch of a second set of titles means that the Knockouts are stretched pretty thin for the TV time and though they are made good use of on Impact, it just doesn’t seem to be doing them any favours in the long term.

With the Hulk Hogan era now underway, it seems the time devoted to the girls may decrease while the numbers within the division continue to expand as TNA is always on the lookout for new talent. Is it time for a Knockouts-only TV show?

Diva Dirt’s 10 Wishes & Predictions for 2010

2009 has just flown by, hasn’t it? It feels like only yesterday we were dishing out the Year-End Awards for 2008. But as we are on the eve of 2010, what a perfect time to convey our wishes and predictions for the year ahead! Feel free to add your own wishes and predictions in the comments!

First, just to get the wishful thinking out of the way…

Wishes for 2010

* Firstly, we really hope Melina has a speedy and/or miraculous recovery. If it is as serious as thought, Raw just won’t be the same without her.
* Allow Tara to have a long and fulfilling Knockouts Championship reign. She deserves one great run with a belt!
* Here’s hoping to a fucking decent WrestleMania match this year. [Sidebar: Beth vs Michelle if we’re getting specific.]
* Dear WWE, that chick Gail Kim? She can wrestle rings around most of your men. Use her, push her, give her a title for chrissakes!
* TNA, take note: Alissa Flash. Same thing.
* Give the proverbial ball to Alicia Fox, Daffney and Eve Torres and let them run with it. They all have a lot to offer and it isn’t just their boobs.
* Dear American work visa people, please let Angelina Love come back to TNA!
* I love Saritaylor as a team but I’m kinda curious to see them in a feud. If you must break them up, give us a series of three-to-five epic matches, won’t you TNA?
* SmackDown, please don’t suffer a slump. We’re counting on you!
* Since we have just one more wish we may as well blow it on something HUGE! Title reigns for Alissa Flash, Beth Phoenix, Gail Kim, Hamada and Natalya are a must.

Feature: The Search for the Next Talk Show Queen

Tyra Banks has announced that she is ending her Emmy-winning talk show in 2010. Meanwhile, the queen of the daytime talk show, Oprah Winfrey is ending her iconic show after 25 years in 2011. Who will give Ellen a run for her money now? The wrestling industry has always been home to charismatic, kooky and downright entertaining stars over the years. Surely those are the ingredients needed to carry one’s own talk show, too? Here are our suggestions for America’s next talk show queen!

Awesome Kong — ‘The Awesome Kong Show’
She’s already the baddest Knockout in the playground — just ask any of her opponents, but I get the impression that she’d be just as hardcore given her own talk show! Kong, like Oprah, is a perfect example of female empowerment which seems to be the main theme of most of these shows. As for Kong’s unique selling point — think Oprah with a little Judge Judy with a dash of Jerry Springer. Kong could have guests come on her show to discuss important issues and solve their problems with Kong’s word as law. And if her guests get out of hand, all she’d have to do is smack them back into line! There’s no need for the security guards like on Springer! Now that equals ratings right? I think it’d be exciting just to see what crazy thing Kong will do next.

Maryse — ‘Maryse’
The sexy French-Canadian Diva may be better suited to a late night phone-in show if you know what I mean, but who better to sex up daytime? Maryse’s talk show would feature a set that is made to look like a fancy boudoir, her guests would all be sexy celebrities and her take on issues such as health, beauty etc. would be far different than those dished out by Tyra! ‘How to last longer in bed’ and ‘Cover up your roots’ may not be as world peace-like as Oprah’s show but Maryse seems unapologetic enough to pull it off! Besides, who wouldn’t want fashion and beauty tips from the gorgeous pin-up?

The Diva Trade Report Card

It’s been two months since the Diva Trade hit us like a bus and changed the landscape of Raw, SmackDown and well, ECW not so much. Since that time, the seven Divas traded have had time to find their feet on their new brands — new feuds, new storylines, new love interests. For some it’s worked out and for others, it hasn’t. Two months removed, we’re going to catch up with our Divas and find out how the Diva Trade has affected them in the ‘Diva Trade Report Card’.

draft_bellasThe Bella Twins
The Bellas’ move to Raw has been wholly unthreatening, thankfully. Hardly ever seen in wrestling attire, the Bellas have served as eye candy to the Guest Host of the week. Not exactly something to write home about!
Verdict: Acceptable. An insignificant trade that doesn’t harm or hurt anyone.

draft_bellasBeth Phoenix
I kicked up something of a fuss when Beth was moved from Raw in October — but I’m happy to say, I’ve been proved wrong. The move to SmackDown has rejuvenated the Glamazon. The brief ‘Glamazon Squash Tour’ provided a monster heel-like reintroduction for Beth that many would expect for a Superstar, it’s rare to see such effort go into a Diva. In my initial look at the trade, I questioned whether WWE would pull the trigger on Beth vs Natalya or McCool but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a tweener-ish Beth challenge Michelle McCool for the Women’s Championship in the near future.
Verdict: Good. SmackDown should bring out a new dynamic to the Beth Phoenix character in the New Year.

The Art of the Diva Comeback

comebacks

Former Divas Champion, Maryse is set to return next Monday night in what will likely end up as one of the worst kept secrets in forever, but the real question is: How will WWE pull it off? The company hasn’t had a great track record with the ‘Diva comeback’. Most of them have been rather boring and as with most things Diva, probably took around 30 seconds to write.

There was a time when comebacks were genuinely exciting and perhaps the best example of this is Lita’s return in 2003, saving Trish Stratus from a beatdown at the hands of Gail Kim and Molly Holly:

Like her or loathe her, this return had all the ingredients of an epic comeback: an iconic Diva who’d been gone for more than a year, a Diva the fans actually cared about and JR screaming to the point of losing his voice added an authenticity to it that made it feel like a WrestleMania main event. Many a Diva fan can recall where they were when this went down or remember their reaction when they first saw it. No ‘ifs’, ‘buts’ or ‘maybes’, this was a storybook comeback — for any Superstar, let alone a Diva.

Fast forward five years and the Diva comeback has been relegated to nothing more than a random appearance mid-match. Here’s one of Candice’s many returns:

While Lita’s return may have been epic, this one was more “Oh… she’s back.” But it didn’t have a patch on Ashley Massaro’s eye-watering return in a multi-Diva lingerie pillowfight. We’ll do you a favour and won’t post the video.

weekly5_5 RAW IS GAIL?
There has been a lot of talk this week about a Gail Kim heel turn and as a Diva Dirt favourite, we are extremely excited about the possibility in the coming weeks on Raw. It looks as though Maryse’s loss [to injury] could be Gail’s gain; as WWE teased tension between Gail and new Divas Champion, Mickie James on Raw.

weekly5_5 WORST. PAY PER VIEW. EVER.
Critics are calling it the worst pay per view of the decade. Wrestling Observer said it was worse than December to Dismember. Ouch! We are talking about TNA’s Victory Road pay per view last Sunday night, that saw two disappointing Knockouts matches and an equally disappointing and frankly, mind boggling title change. The PPV saw Angelina Love regain the Knockouts Championship from Victoria after just 10 days, in a match that was underwhelming for such talented workers.

Meanwhile, TNA had a bright idea to put Jenna Morasca vs Sharmell on pay per view. It was the shambles everyone expected it to be. This pay per view will ~live on in our memories~… for all the wrong reasons.

weekly5_5 DON “JERRY SPRINGER” WEST ACTS A DAMN FOOL…
Every company, it seems has that one announcer you can’t stand and want to punch in the face. For TNA, that’s Don West. So why, TNA, would you torture us even more by giving him a Jerry Springer-esque segment in which he hosted Sharmell and Jenna Morasca [plus their trainers] ahead of tonight’s Victory Road pay per view? Jerry Springer, you ain’t. Mr West’s ass-kissing of Sharmell tried to come across like The King circa-1999, but fell flat. Adding to the Jerry Springer vibe was the war of words amongst our Knockouts, something tells me Sojo Bolt in particular would fit right in on an episode of Jerry…

weekly5_5 NIKKI BELLA… IS THAT YOU, GIRL?
Oh those Bella Twins! Just when you write them off, they come back and start earning their keep… just about, anyway. Last week, the twins impressed with their mic skills and this week, Nikki Bella made a solid effort against Katie Lea on ECW. Nikki’s Gail Kim-esque running armdrag made my jaw drop. Perhaps there’s hope for them yet? My eyes have certainly opened and I’m willing to give them a fair shot.

The Weekly Top 10: 10 Rules for the Diva Mark

theweeklytop10

Welcome to a new feature here at Diva Dirt, the concept of which you may recognise from The Late Show with David Letterman. In every episode of The Late Show, Letterman has a satirical ‘top ten’, that combined with the recently published “20 Rules for the Diva Afterlife” gave us an idea! Check back every week for Diva Dirt’s Letterman-esque Weekly Top 10!

10 Rules for the Diva Mark

1. Pick a Diva
The first step to being a Diva mark is picking a Diva to mark for. Duh! Prime candidates are Divas with limited ring skills, zero charisma and/or a questionable past ( modeling, contest winners and porn). These flaws will make perfect targets for others to pick at, making for the perfect opportunity to unleash your marky fury.

2. Declare Your Love
Once you’ve picked your Diva, the next step is to show everyone how much you love them. Scour the message boards for any and every thread about your Diva. Leave borderline obssessive messages such as: “ZOMG! She’s the bestest diva everz!'” Make sure every other message on the thread is yours.

3. Twitter Me
If your Diva of choice has a Twitter (or any other social networking profile), use it !This is your direct line to your chosen Diva and your best chance to grab her attention. Send messages like: “You’re the like best ever!” or “What are you doing RIGHT NOW? I wish I was there =(”

If she doesn’t respond, keep trying! She can only ignore you for so long…

4. Take Her Name
Change your Twitter username to ‘BobbyKanellis4Maria’ or something similar.

5. The World Revolves Around Her
One of the mark’s most unique qualities is their uncanny ability to insert their Diva into any conversation. She is the Alpha and the Omega — no other Diva matters. Here’s a perfect example:

John: Hey did you see Mickie James’ match against Beth Phoenix?
Mark:
Yeah… it was OK. You know what would have made it even better? If Candice was in it! I know she’s been out of action for a year, but she totally deserves the title. I mean, she is the best, right?

But don’t stop at wrestling conversations. Bring your favorite Diva up at the dinner table, at work or even during your biology presentation. A true mark’s work is never done.

The Weekly Roundup (May 30 – June 05, 2009) – A Week in Television

weeklyroundup

Welcome to Diva Dirt’s new feature – The Weekly Roundup, a look at the week in television! From Raw, SmackDown, ECW and TNA too, we look back at the week’s highs and lows as well as giving you the opportunity to catch up on what you’ve missed!

MAY 30th – JUNE 5th, 2009

This week has seen some solid TV efforts from WWE, an okay week for TNA and the emergence of women’s wrestling on ROH. This week saw the first time in history that Diva Dirt has covered ROH on HDNet & we’re very happy that we did…

Best Bet: My highlight of the week came from ROH, as it incorporated sister promotion, SHIMMER into it’s broadcast. I have to be honest and say I haven’t really seen much of SHIMMER or any of these girls before but I was thoroughly impressed by the triple threat match on HDNet last Saturday. If you haven’t yet seen it, check it out after the cut – it’s well worth it. I hope ROH does more “SHIMMER Lite” segments in future. (PS: I’m already preferring ROH’s production style to TNA’s rollercoaster sickness style on Impact).

Honourable Mention: Like last week, SmackDown gives us our honourable mention of the week with an outstanding six Divas tag team match.

Low Point: I felt this week’s Impact didn’t see a strong enough followup to last week’s fantastic debut of the former Victoria. Not only has she been renamed ‘Tara’, but she’s also stuck in a one minute segment from a two hour broadcast. Not a good followup at all.

The Weekly Roundup (May 24 – 30, 2009) – A Week in Television

weeklyroundup

Welcome to Diva Dirt’s new feature – The Weekly Roundup, a look at the week in television! From Raw, SmackDown, ECW and TNA too, we look back at the week’s highs and lows as well as giving you the opportunity to catch up on what you’ve missed!

MAY 24th – MAY 30th, 2009

It’s been a positively exhausting seven days for us women’s wrestling fans! From TNA’s Sacrifice pay per view last Sunday to last night’s Friday Night SmackDown. Take a look back at the week that was, with Diva Dirt.

Best Bet: The best moment of the week had to be Victoria‘s TNA debut on Impact, this past Thursday night. We saw a rejuvenated Vicious Vixen looking better than she has in years, make quite the impact on Angelina Love (no pun intended). This moment will surely be a strong contender in the 2009 Year-End Awards.

Honourable Mention: The next top moment came from star-in-the-making, Alicia Fox who got the chance to compete in the ring with the multi-talented, three time Women’s Champion, Melina. Sure she lost, but for a young Diva, working with the champion is one hell of a rub. We predict big things for A-Fox!

Low Point: The disappointing Divas Championship scenario on Raw left a bad taste in my mouth this week. Mickie James looked to be in line for a feud with Maryse, but it now seems Kelly Kelly will get that honour.

The Weekly Roundup (April 19 – 25, 2009) – A Week in Television

weeklyroundup

Welcome to Diva Dirt’s new feature – The Weekly Roundup, a look at the week in television! From Raw, SmackDown, ECW and TNA too, we look back at the week’s highs and lows as well as giving you the opportunity to catch up on what you’ve missed!

APRIL 19TH – APRIL 25TH, 2009

This week has been huge for the Divas and Knockouts, possibly the most action packed week of wrestling so far in 2009! Over the past week, we have seen all three of the major women’s titles on the line; the Women’s Championship, the Divas Championship and the Knockout Championship were all defended.

Best Bet: My standout of the week was the Women’s Championship match from Raw, as Melina successfully defended the title against rival, Beth Phoenix before moving over to SmackDown.

Close Call: Angelina Love‘s Knockout Championship victory at Lockdown was definitely a highlight of the week, as she finally captured the belt, but I personally preferred the Raw match.

Low Point: This week’s low comes from ECW’s booking of their new Diva, Natalya, as she jobs not once but twice to Hornswoggle in the same week. Pitiful.

Mane Event: Top Ten Worst Hairstyles

Let’s face it, it’s happened to the best of us: the good, the bad, the beautiful, and well, quite frankly, it’s just makes the ugly; bad hair days! For the most part, when there just isn’t a thing to do with your hair, you could always throw it up in a bun, wrap it in a scarf, or even hide it under a baseball cap. But when you’re a WWE Diva or a TNA Knockout, there’s just no exception to those inexcusable mane events!

Join me as I countdown the Top Ten Worst Hairstyles in the world of WWE and TNA. From Divas To Knockouts, this is a Top Ten list you wouldn’t want to be apart of. In an extended version of Diva-Dirt.Com’s Project Diva, I’ll be ranking fahion: the best and the worst! So who will be in our mane event? Can you take a guess… think you know who it is? Well, join me, shall you, and let’s talk hair…

#10 – Mickie “Don’t Call Me Melina” James – Now face this; when Mickie James made her debut, a whole load of us had to do a double take. Was that Melina that just attacked Victoria, coming to the aid of Trish Stratus? The comparisons seem to have been endless on the Internet, which only added further flames to the fire in a much publicized backstage feud between the two. Ah, the good ole days when Melina’s Internet ignorance got the best of her with a shoot blog… and Mickie’s graphic Arby’s photoshoot first surfaced. Good times, I’m telling ya. So which side did you belong to? Team Mickie or Team Melina. Regardless of your preference, caught in-between was the thought: “That’s the best she could do with hair… DEBUT night?!” She has since come so far and has done so much… but I’m still thinkin’ Arby’s.

#09 – Awesome King Kong Braids – How do I even begin with this one? I get that Kong is supposed to be some ‘monster’ wrestler and the biggest threat to Women’s Wrestling, but really? With hair like that? To me, she’s just a seemingly robust woman with a speech impediment, and a really bad case of the braids – yeah, TNA means nothing to me, I don’t watch it. A shout out to all of our Clueless fans; remember when Dionne found that strand of “cheap polyester hair” in the back of Murray’s car… yep, looks like Kong gets her ‘hair did’ with the same slut. There’s nothing intimidating about braids, in fact, nothing good about braids either – NOTHING. Kong should grow out a fro ala Macy Gray, then she’d have the rest of us running like hell like we’re in pursuit of hair relaxer. Yikes!

How to Be a Halloween Diva: Part 1

Halloween is just around the corner, and if you’re stuck on a costume, you’re pretty much out of luck. But if you’re willing to prance around in costume any of the other 364 days of the year and are yearning to dress as your favorite WWE Diva, check out the “costumes” we’ve assembled. Below is Part 1, with Part 2 following tomorrow:

BETH PHOENIX

Beth Phoenix has a pretty unique look – she is the Glamazon, after all. To achieve her look, you would need to focus on the basic look: slick catsuit, long blonde hair (with red accents), and the headband/tiara that’s ever-present on her forehead.

The Look:
Hair: long blonde wig, red hair extensions
Outfit: vinyl halter catsuit, black & white wingtip boots
Accessories: gold crystal tiara headband
The Act: Speak rarely, and give nearly everyone who you encounter a cold stare. A few smirks are allowed, but Beth is much of a smiler, so keep those to a minimum. Don’t forget to break out a few body-builder poses while you’re at it! Walk slow and determined, and above all: intimidate.
