SmackDown Redux – June 27, 2008

This week on SmackDown: A blockbuster six Diva tag team match saw Cherry, Kelly Kelly and Michelle McCool face off against Maryse, Natalya and Victoria.

Thoughts & Reactions
This week’s Friday Night SmackDown left me in no doubt that the blue brand is slowly edging in on Raw to co-hold the title as WWE’s top show. And SmackDown’s women’s division possibly had it’s best outing yet last night, in what I think was the single most polished match that the growing division has showcased since it’s inception. I thoroughly enjoyed this match and the work was simply superb, all these Divas worked so cohesively and all the Divas got time to shine. What a fitting match for a night that marked a new era for SmackDown; WWE really went all out during this year’s Draft to establish SmackDown as a top brand to co-headline with Raw. Finally, they have realised that they can’t afford to hold SmackDown down in favour of Raw, finally they realise that both shows need to make bank in order to succeed. Last night, I thought the six Diva tag match was a seminal match for the show and division going forward.

I really don’t have anything bad to say about this match, there wasn’t any obvious botching, all the Divas worked hard and made this a fun, competetive match. On Raw, we’re so used to seeing one Diva be dominant in the ring during tag matches but in this match, all the Divas got ring-time and it really put over all the Divas and that’s a great thing. Natalya and Michelle really went at it and just whet my appetite even more for a singles match, Natalya is so impressive in the ring and I loved her submission hold on Michelle. WWE has really held out on this singles match, I hope they deliver big time when it finally goes down – either have it as a main event of SmackDown or on pay per view.

The other Divas were great too, major props to Kelly Kelly, I was really impressed with her on SmackDown. She showed such confidence in the ring, more than she has ever shown before and really pulled out of the bag, some great moves. In her previous matches with Victoria, the Vicious Vixen had pretty much carried her through the match; however their portion in this match, Kelly was doing a lot more of the work. She really has come a long way! “Cherry Cherry” (haha) and Maryse were fine too, though they didn’t wrestle as much as the others. Victoria, as always, was a consummate professional.

Since JR was drafted to SmackDown, I have been looking forward all week to hearing he and Mick Foley call a Divas match for SmackDown and they didn’t disappoint. I cannot wait for JR to call the eventual moment when the first ever Divas Champion is crowned. That will really make history.

All in all, this was one of the best matches SmackDown has put on in recent months and that’s a bold statement because they really have been on fine form. How will Maria factor into the division when she makes her debut (I’m assuming) next week? It’ll be interesting to see how she fits in, I would love to see a feud with her and Victoria to start out with.

SmackDown Spoilers: June 27, 2008

The new era of Friday Night SmackDown begins this week (kinda), check out what Vickie has in store for the Divas below. Unfortunately, no freakin’ mention of the Divas Championship, I’m beginning to lose hope… Maryse, Victoria & Natalya defeated Cherry, Michelle McCool & Kelly Kelly when Maryse pinned Cherry.

SmackDown Redux – June 20, 2008

This week on SmackDown: Layla and Michelle McCool put on another great match before the crowd as Natalya watched on from the ramp.

Thoughts & Reactions
After a lackluster Raw, SmackDown was on fine form this week and I thoroughly enjoyed the match between Layla and Michelle McCool. The duo have had, I believe, three matches alone this year on SmackDown and each has been better than the last. This time the Divas got more ring time than their last encounter and thus, were afforded the chance to be more creative. It’s a rare to see the WWE Divas take the action outside of the ring, but we had a cool spot with Layla and Michelle doing just that, battling on the outside which added to the match. Michelle hitting the ring apron face first was nicely done too.

This match wasn’t the usual “job to Michelle”, in fact Layla controlled most of the match as the aggressor and looked confident in her role. Sure, she’s still got a long way to go but she is definitely on the right track. These two Divas seem to have great in-ring chemistry and are a lot of fun to watch… I hope one day we see a real one-on-one feud between them.

Layla really made Michelle work for her victory and the end spot was again, well done and the addition of Natalya added some emphasis to the new Divas Championship. I think it’s pretty obvious Michelle will be the other title contender and I, for one, am looking forward to the match. Unfortunately, there has been no mention of the Divas Championship being decided at Night of Champions – this has been pure speculation by us fans. This has me worried! Hopefully, the match will be announced on SmackDown next week or they could even announce it earlier in the week with Vickie Guerrero explaining her decision for Natalya’s challenger on WWE.com.

Introducing SmackDown! Redux – June 13, 2008

Welcome one and all to the debut edition of SmackDown! Redux!

This week on SmackDown!: It was the night of Cherry and Maryse, as they competed in the featured Divas contest. Meanwhile, we also saw the debut of Alicia Fox.

Thoughts & Reactions
Not a great week for SmackDown! Redux to debut, because in my honest opinion this was the weakest week for the Divas of SmackDown! in quite some time. SmackDown! has improved leaps and bounds in the months since WrestleMania and this week’s show stuck out like a sore thumb in comparison to the strong booking we’ve seen of late. There was just no logic this week; they introduce the new Divas Championship last week and then this week? No sighting of Natalya, who is actually in the Championship match. No qualifying match for her opponent. No storyline advancement surrounding the title at all. Instead, we revert back to Cherry vs Maryse, a feud which should have been dropped and incorporated into the hype surrounding the Divas Championship.

These two Divas, personally for me, do very little. I see no personal investment in them, thus I wasn’t too into this match. They did put on a surprisingly good match a few weeks ago on SmackDown!, but if it’s been done already why do it again?! There’s no storyline advancement here at all, they just did the same match again using the same storylines that led to the first match!!! Cherry picks up the win, whoop-de-doo the match is over and Melanie is left feeling underwhelmed. To me, Cherry vs Maryse is like a starter not the main course, so of course I was left saying, “What? That’s it?!” when I realised this was our lot in terms of the Divas this week *sigh* Furthermore, Michael Hayes returns to creative next week, which is leaving me less optimistic about the women’s division – in his absence, we have actually seen some great matches and great feuds since WrestleMania.

Next up, we had the debut of Alica Fox aka Victoria Crawford. Now I won’t be judging her too harshly based on a 30-second segment, but she looks pretty enough and I hear she’s a decent wrestler. Let’s hope that she can add to the women’s division in the near future. And please, for the love of God use her as a face when that happens. I’m sick of the mismatch in both the divisions; the Divas who can actually wrestle always come in as heels and the ones that can’t are faces. If this girl can wrestle as well as it seems, she should be able to team up with Michelle and Cherry against the likes of Victoria, Natalya and Maryse.

All in all, it was a pretty “bleh” week on both RAW and SmackDown! this week. But anyway, I am going try and be optimistic that both will step up their game next week and since SD! has already taped next week’s show, I think it’s going to be a decent match for the Divas.

Michelle McCool vs. Maryse w/ Deuce and Domino. Towards the end of the match Cherry’s music plays and she comes out to the ramp, distracting Maryse long enough for Michelle to get the submission and the win.

SmackDown!: War of Two Worlds

A day late, but whatever. This week on SmackDown! we were treated to a rare sight on WWE television – two Divas matches. While neither were the equivalent of culinary delights, they were pretty good given who was involved! First up was the All-American Diva, Michelle McCool who has been on quite a roll in WWEverse over the past six months as she faced off against Layla.

Given the experience levels of these two Divas, this match was slightly sloppy but still very good. It was interesting to see Michelle work and guide her opponent rather than being the one guided. With two quasi-experienced Divas in the ring, this was a lot better than I expected wrestling wise. However, this match was pretty boring, I remember these two hooking up a few months back and that was a fun match. These two Divas are easily the best products of the Diva Search to date, with no Victoria or Natalya in action this week – there wasn’t that strong competetive edge to this match or the later match, but was a passable 4 minutes.

Oh, Maria… Just No
